Sustainable Marine Aquaculture & Seafood Workshop

Ocean Guardian’s Valerie Cannon attended a Sustainable Marine Aquaculture and Seafood Workshop hosted by MOWI USA.  The event was part of the One Ocean Expedition of the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research and supported by the Consulate General & Team Norway.  The workshop was held aboard Norway’s largest and oldest square-rigged sailing ship, the S.S. Statsraad Lehmkuhl, which was recently converted into a state-of-the-art floating ocean research laboratory.

The workshop focused on information sharing and knowledge advancement for sustainable marine aquaculture development, with frank discussions regarding green shipping, shoreside power options and regulatory requirements.  The roundtable discussion was moderated by Catarina Martins, Chief Sustainability and Technology Officer, Mowi ASA (Norway). One of the key takeaways from the workshop was the need for collaboration between all stakeholders, including shoreside utility and environmental planning. Florida Ocean Alliance’s Executive Director, Laura DiBella, was the keynote speaker.

The One Ocean Expedition is a two year circumnavigation by Statsraad Lehmkuhl to share knowledge about the crucial role of the ocean for a sustainable development in a global perspective.
